Track: B6. Evaluative Strategies for Sustainability
Background/Objectives
Decarbonizing the electricity grid will not be enough to meet climate emission targets; electrification of residences will be a key factor in meeting decarbonization goals. Home energy upgrade decisions are influenced by where we live, who we listen to, and how we make safe, comfortable spaces for ourselves, our families, and our friends.
Approach/Activities
We created, distributed, and analyzed the largest ever home energy behavior study in the United States, recruiting 10,000 residents in six regions across the country. We examined regional differences in resident preferences, motivations, changes in homes and yards, and home energy technology adoption.
Results/Lessons Learned
We will explore key regional differences and motivations in electrification technology adoption. We'll discuss resident preferences regarding their homes and decisions and describe electrification barriers, program participation trends, and trusted sources of information. Actual decarbonization-friendly technology adoption, led by the West, was roughly 40% lower than expressed willingness to adopt across all regions. Join us to dig into these regional differences and discuss the important implications they have on residential decarbonization policy and program messaging.
