B4. Navigating Climate Risks: Modeling and Risk Assessment

Biography

Dr. Werth joined the Atmospheric Technologies Group (ATG) of the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) as a Senior Scientist in 2006. His interest has always been in the dynamics of the atmosphere, particularly with regards to his graduate work. Previously, he had been studying the effects of tropical deforestation on the local and global climate using a global climate model, noting how a surface change in the tropics could affect locations throughout the world. His research now focuses on the mesoscale climate and the evolution of the nocturnal boundary layer. In the time since his arrival, he has published a quality check of the Global Forecast System, a study of the nocturnal boundary layer and low-level jet over Oklahoma, and a study of evolutionary programming methods to improve mesoscale models. He has also become involved in the statistical downscaling of global climate model data as applied to site operations and in developing a software tool to estimate the wildfire threat faced by homeowners.
