Managing LNAPL Sites Using the Latest Tools and Science
Background/Objectives
Background/Objectives: The technical and regulatory landscape has changed significantly in recent years as better understanding of LNAPL behavior and improved tools and techniques to quantify LNAPL have been introduced into the mainstream practice of environmental management. This presentation will highlight key developments in LNAPL and multi-phase fluid science and their application to managing petroleum spill sites with LNAPL. Background on the basis for LNAPL Site Conceptual Model (LCSM) development and diagnostic tools will be presented with examples provided. Guidance including ITRC, API, ASTM and CRCCARE is identified as the basis for improved understanding and quantification of LNAPL behavior.
Approach/Activities
Approach/Activities: Specific use and examples of metrics including LNAPL transmissivity and natural source zone depletion (NSZD) will be provided as tangible work products generated to build credible LCSMs. The discussion will debunk lingering misconceptions regarding LNAPL behavior and offer insight regarding practical recoverability and regulatory advocacy. Case study examples will be provided to illustrate application of these tools.
Results/Lessons Learned
Lessons Learned: Practical use of LNAPL transmissivity and NSZD metrics will be highlighted for several different examples and site settings with implications for tool use and benefits for each cited example.
