2023 Update: Lessons Learned from Pneumatic Fracturing and In Situ Remediation for Projects in New Jersey Bedrock
Background/Objectives
New Jersey has numerous contaminated bedrock sites (e.g.,CVOCs) which pose challenges to both characterization, chemistry selection and injection approach. At the same time, New Jersey DEP has strict remediation deadlines, making sure remediation projects move quickly to completion, which adds financial pressure to performing successful remediation. Cascade has supported New Jersey consultants and LSRPs in design and remediation of these sites with various amendments (ZVI and solid persulfate) injection and fracturing approaches.
Approach/Activities
Delivery of liquid and solid amendments in weathered and competent bedrock requires more advanced drilling and injection approaches including high pressure fracturing of weathered zones and enhancing permeability in competent bedrock. In both cases these are accomplished through open or cased boreholes isolating fractures with straddle packer systems.
Cascade will present a summary of nine (9) projects from 2019 to 2023, including rationale for target intervals, fracturing approach, and summary of overall project performance and results.
Results/Lessons Learned
Cascade will present a 2023 update on nine (9) New Jersey projects we have supported, including lessons learned with delivery designs, drilling approaches, actual field conditions, and injection/fracturing equipment utilized to help site owners and their consultants benefit from these lessons learned for future remediation approaches.
