Dating mineral insulating oils (MIO) in soils using di-tert-butyl-para-cresol (DBPC)
Background/Objectives
When recovering from an accidental release of MIO, previous and similar contamination in the soil may be intercepted. The analytical results in total petroleum and the product identification do not adequately differentiate the two contamination events. It is then recommended to carry out a mass balance of the hazardous material recovered to prove the recovery. However, this calculation is too often based on hypotheses which do not allow the two environmental events to be clearly differentiated.
Approach/Activities
Hydro-Québec and Englobe have created a diagnostic tool which is the determination of the age of the MIO by the analysis of the DBPC. This antioxidant additive in MIO, is analyzed using a method developed with the help of AGAT Laboratories. It acts as a tracer to specify the age of the hydrocarbons and helps with reporting the right recovery.
