1,4 D-Stroy Field Studies
Background/Objectives
1,4-Dioxane is a recalcitrant organic contaminant commonly used as a solvent and stabilizer. It is found in 20% of US drinking water, affects over 90 million people, and approximately 1,900 utilities in the US. Current in situ treatment technologies have difficulty reaching health reference levels for 1,4-dioxane.
Bioremediation due to its in situ longevity is typically able to reach lower treatment concentrations than oxidants or other in situ methods. Known 1,4-dioxane degraders have been used to treat 1,4-dioxane for the last decade but have lacked in popularity due to challenges with co-metabolism practicality or difficulty with cultivation.
Approach/Activities
Recently Allonnia has begun field-based testing of a lesser-known aerobic metabolic bacteria strain which has shown positive results for treating down to low levels of 1,4-dioxane. Initial testing has shown up to 98% reduction in 1,4-dioxane for high- and low-concentration treatment and resiliency over a several-month period with no post-treatment amendments during in situ mass flux.
Results/Lessons Learned
Allonnia will share the challenges, successes, and results of multiple field-based pilot study trials of its new bacteria, marketed as “1,4 D-Stroy”. The 1,4 D-Stroy bacteria which breaks down 1,4-dioxane is an effective new option for treating both low and high levels of 1,4-dioxane contamination in groundwater.
