The Impacts of Oxidant Demand and Test Methods on Site Characterization and Design
Background/Objectives
When characterizing a site for ISCO treatment with permanganate, determining background soil oxidant demand is a key component to site design and implementation as it can affect the oxidant chosen and the amount of oxidant required. There are multiple laboratory methods used to measure soil oxidant demand including permanganate natural oxidant demand (PNOD) and total oxidant demand (TOD) but each method has different sample preparation that can affect the final result. Method selection and interpretation of the test’s result are key components to determining cost-effective site solutions.
Approach/Activities
This analysis of laboratory generated results from ASTM Method D7262-10(2016), typically used for PNOD and TOD testing, will show the variations between these methods used by the industry for design of ISCO treatment. Samples from various sites and soil types were analyzed with the method variations to determine how this affects demand results. The main difference between the test methods is the presence of a drying step to homogenize soils to the same moisture content and eliminate contaminant of concern demand. Soil demands are compared between the various test methods along with moisture content to show trends between the different methods from mulitple site soils.
Results/Lessons Learned
Differences between test methods for PNOD and TOD show differences in soil background demand which may impact the selection of oxidation technology and site design including amount of oxidant needed, application method, and site success.
