Commingled cVOC and Metal Plume with Hydrogeological Complexities

Background/Objectives:

This project focuses on a historical manufacturing facility located along the perimeter of a residential and commercial zoned area in northern New Jersey. Source soil impacts were excavated during the last property transaction and tenant vacancy, allowing for soil excavations within two presumed source areas along with the installation of injection gallery infrastructure. Groundwater impacts consist of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (cVOCs) along with the primary contaminant of concern, tetrachloroethene (PCE). The highest PCE monitoring well concentration is 6,800 micrograms per liter (µg/L), located within the building boundary near the rear source excavation. In addition to the cVOCs concerns, elevated concentrations of chromium (Cr⁺⁶) were reported at 9,160 µg/L and 6,615 µg/L for nickel (Ni) downgradient of the rear source excavation area.

Site soils consist of medium to fine silty sands. Groundwater varies between 8 to 10 feet (ft) below ground surface (bgs) with varying seasonal flow variations differing throughout the Site.

The goal was to verify remedial effectiveness via cVOC and target metals destruction, evaluate radial influence and substrate dosage for the facilitation of a broader scale remedial application.

Approach/Activities:

Reductive biotic and abiotic remediation utilized small droplets of emulsified vegetable oil (EVO), micro-zero valent iron (ZVI), and bioaugmentation inoculum. The remedial design encompassed a total of ten (10) temporary injection points (TIPs) installed via a track mounted direct push rig, two (2) reinjectable permanent points (RIPs), and two (2) source area injection infiltration gallery wells. Each TIP was installed via direct push in a bottom-up method, targeting a 5 to 15 ft bgs treatment interval. Each treatment interval received the prescribed remedial amendments, followed by a significant quantity of anerobic chase water with bioaugmentation inoculum to facilitate radial influence.

The key project goal was the implementation of the small-scale event to evaluate remedial performance and feasibility.
