The Use of Epoxy Floor Coatings for Effective VI Mitigation and Site Management

Background/Objectives. The utilization of epoxy floor coatings as a defense against contaminant vapor intrusion represents a compelling approach to safeguarding indoor air quality for existing buildings. Equally as important, epoxy flooring coatings serve as a proactive site management tool, avoiding the need for retrofitting existing structures with sub-slab piping networks, thereby offering a more cost-effective, less disruptive, and efficient solution. Indoor air data from two projects, both before and after the installation of epoxy floor coatings, will demonstrate significant reduction in indoor contaminant concentrations while maintaining flexibility for the building occupants during mitigation efforts.
Approach/Activities
Approach/Activities. Two project sites provide real-world examples of how epoxy floor coating systems effectively reduced high levels of cVOCs to below regulatory limits. The evaluation process conducted by the project team, covering topics such as the design and installation of epoxy floor coating systems and the assessment of potential disruptions to building occupants during the installation phase will be discussed. In addition, an analysis will be provided highlighting the benefits of properly installed epoxy floor coating systems, including their capacity to reinforce the integrity of building slabs, which enhances contaminant vapor intrusion protection.
Results/Lessons Learned
Results/Lessons Learned. Providing appropriate vapor intrusion mitigation solutions while balancing site constraints at existing buildings can be difficult. The post-installation results for both projects discussed support the efficacy of epoxy floor coatings in vapor intrusion mitigation without having to completely disrupt site operations and building slab/foundations. The lessons learned highlight the potential of epoxy floor coatings as an effective tool in combating vapor intrusion, offering a cost-efficient, long-lasting solution to safeguard indoor air quality and, ultimately, human health.
