Biography

Dr. Burnell currently works as a Principal Hydrogeologist and Mathematical Modeler in the Chantilly, VA office of Tetra Tech. He has over 30 years of experience in applying mathematical models to both solve problems in groundwater remediation and provide expert witness testimony in groundwater litigation issues. He has a Ph.D. in Geophysics from Georgia Institute of Technology. For the past 10 years, he has also served as an adjunct professor of mathematics at Strayer and Northern VA Community College where he teaches both undergraduate and graduate level courses in applied mathematics. He is a co-author of the recently updated HET-TRANS and AT123D-AT semi-analytical solute transport modeling codes. His current research interests include: 1) developing and applying reactive transport models in heterogeneous media; 2) developing new analytical solutions for contaminant transport in groundwater and well hydraulics, and 3) machine learning and quantum computing. .
