Biography

Gary Birk is Founder and Managing Partner of Tersus Environmental, based in North Carolina. He is a Professional Engineer registered in North Carolina, Virginia, and Florida and holds a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from North Carolina State University. With more than 40 years of experience, Gary has led the development and application of innovative in situ technologies for remediation of contaminated soil and groundwater at sites across North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. His work focuses on sustainable, green approaches to site restoration, with particular emphasis on bioremediation. In 2011, Gary commercialized EDS-ER™, a widely adopted water-mixable, vegetable-oil-based substrate that provides a long-lasting source of carbon and hydrogen for enhanced reductive dechlorination and related bioremediation processes. He has also developed practical design tools that have helped advance industry approaches to estimating substrate application rates. Gary is a co-inventor on seven U.S. patents related to soil and groundwater remediation.
